In the first half of 2017, one million square meters (m2) were opened in new shopping centers in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, with more than 11.1 million m2 of new space still under development. This is one of the conclusions of the latest CBRE report "EMEA Shopping Center Development".

For Cristina Arouca, Director of Research at CBRE Portugal, "In Portugal, where the market of shopping centers is in a mature state and with a good geographic coverage, the development of new projects is currently limited. The year 2017 only has two inaugurations - the Mar Shopping Algarve and Évora Forum, with a total of 81,100 m2 - and there is no other project under construction, that is, there is no forecast of new openings for the coming years. However, as in Europe, there are some expansion projects underway or under study. The expansion works of Oeiras Parque and NorteShopping have started recently and in 2018 the start of works in Colombo in Lisbon and in Glicínias Plaza in Aveiro is also planned. "
